Looking for an Outdoor Adventure? Try Biking Through New West!

We all know that BC is known for its stunning landscapes and abundance of outdoor activities, and New Westminster is no exception! If you’re ready for an epic two-wheeled adventure in the city, check out our recommendations for the best cycling routes in New West.

Plan your route

The two best routes for the most scenic ride through New West are the Central Valley Greenway and the BC Parkway. These paved paths include bike lanes on busy roads, riverfront access on the New West leg, and carry through Historic Downtown. Both paths also have connections through Metro Vancouver. For details on these routes, click here.

Along the way

While riding through Sapperton, take the road down to Sapperton Landing which will lead you along the waterfront. Stop for a break at one of the many lookouts to take in the beautiful scenery of the Fraser River. Read about the history of the Fraser River and how it is historically linked to the BC Penitentiary just up the hill.

For some fun fact finding activities, visit the Fraser River Discovery Centre to learn about the history and modern use of the mighty Fraser River. With lots of hands-on activities, this stop is a kid favourite. Looking to enjoy the river instead of just learning about it? Paddlewheeler Tours offers boat cruises along the river to give you a full view and experience of this incredible waterway. Click here to book your tour.

Coming to New West on October 17th & 18th is the New West Cultural Crawl! Taking place over five neighbourhoods in the city, this is the perfect event to tackle on two wheels.

Work up an appetite?

When it’s time to pause for a snack, New Westminster has something for everyone. For a casual stop in Downtown New West, the River Market has a variety of restaurants, including Re-Up BBQ, Longtail, Angelina’s Dutch Corner & more. They also have bike racks and accessible outdoor seating available, making them the perfect one-stop shop for hungry adventurers.

For a high-end dine-in experience downtown, visit Piva Modern Italian or El Santo contemporary Mexican on Columbia St. While these restaurants offer a variety of mouthwatering dishes, we recommend trying the Carpaccio and Duck & Fig pizza from Piva, or the Tacos De Pescado and Trio De Salsa with homemade tortilla chips from El Santo.

Or if you’re stopping in Sapperton, check out Gino’s Restaurant and the Taco Factory — just two of the many delicious options in the area. Carb load with a plate of fresh pasta from Gino’s, or grab a few authentic Mexican tacos to go and enjoy a picnic in Sapperton Park.

If you’re feeling thirsty

In Sapperton on route for the Central Valley Greenway, you’ll find Another Beer Co. Equipped with a patio and bike rack, it’s the perfect place to stop for drinks. Try one of their latest beers, like their It Lives By The River Triple IPA or the This Pilsner is a Lager Czech Pilsner.

For those taking the BC Parkway route looking for a drink, take your pick of a brewery or winery… or both! Pacific Breeze Winery has its tasting rooms open and is available for pre-booked winery tours. Steel and Oak has their patio open (weather dependent), beer taps flowing, and sometimes features a delicious treat. Check their social media to see when they are hosting a pop-up food truck or vendor to get the goods.
