Censored! Forbidden Classics of the Wicked Stage: A Reading Series
What good is sitting alone in your room? Join City Stage New West in a comfy “living room” setting at Anvil Centre for the 2019 Sips ‘n Scripts reading series: Censored! Forbidden Classics of the Wicked Stage, featuring 3 banned comedies spanning twenty-three hundred years of history, all addressing still-controversial themes of women’s sexual agency.
Beer, wine and a specialty themed drink will be available for purchase at each reading so you can sit back with their “sips” and enjoy the readings or get more engaged by reading supporting roles with City Stage New West’s professional actors. Have fun adding sound effects, or taking part in intermission activities. Post-reading discussions with experts, artists and facilitators will include histories of the works, their impact, and their censorship.
All events are free. Drinks available for purchase. Cash only. Registration required.

In 1927, Mae West starred on Broadway in her smash-hit melodrama Sex. Censored a year later, the “obscene, indecent, immoral” comedy landed a much richer West in jail, helping launch her brilliant, controversial career as one of the first female playwrights and actresses to demand and receive creative control over her work. Queen of the double-entendre, West became an erotic icon who made assertiveness feminine and fun.
