Getting the Word Out: Fake News from a Hundred Years Ago

October 25, 2018 @ 10:00 am - April 28, 2019 @ 5:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every day that begins at 10:00am, repeating indefinitely

Free

On Thursday October 25, the New Westminster Museum and Archives will open its latest exhibition, Getting the Word Out.  The opening reception, at 6 pm on the third floor of the Anvil Centre, features tours and a no-host bar. The exhibit runs to April 28, 2019.

The new exhibition brings our social media era and New West’s earliest newspapers together.  The digital age has changed how people consume news.  How do we begin to tease out fact from opinion or information from disinformation?  Fear and emotion can influence to how we respond to, share and perpetuate the stories we are exposed to.  However, thoughtful consideration and critical thinking also contribute to what we choose to do with what we read.

These issues are not new; early newspapers also presented challenges when it came to appraising the facts.
