WINDS at New Media Gallery Opening Reception

June 21, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 8:45 pm

Everyone is welcomed to the opening of four fascinating installations and two Artist Talks.
6:30 – 7:30     David Bowen + Chris Welsby speak on their practice & the works in the exhibition
7:30 – 8:45     Public Opening Reception

Landscape and weather have long shared an intimate connection with the arts.  Each of the works in this exhibition is a landscape,  captured, interpreted, and presented through technology.   Each of the four artists in this exhibition takes as a material process,  the movement of wind through physical space & time.  Each work looks at how our perception and understanding of landscape can be interpreted and presented through technology.

These works have been created through what might be understood as a scientific process of collected data, acute observation; by incorporating and measuring things like motion, pressure, sound and pattern.  The artists then take us in other directions; allowing technology to render visible that which is invisible, creating and focussing on peculiar qualities of sound, light or movement in ways that seem to influence emotion or suggest memory, dwelling on iconic places or events, or revealing in subtle ways, the subjective nature of time.  In each of the works (even those which can be considered nomadic) questions around the nature of illusive experience and how to capture it brings inevitable connections to authorship, loss, memory and memento mori.
