5 Picnic Spots to Visit this Spring in New Westminster!

Below, we have listed five parks in New Westminster that are within walking distance from nearby Skytrain stations, or accessible by a quick bus ride.


Westminster Pier Park

Right across the street from Columbia Skytrain Station is the popular Westminster Pier Park overlooking the Fraser River. This park is easily accessible for those driving as well, offering lots of available pay parking. With picnic tables, benches, fields, playgrounds, a basketball court, washroom facilities, and beautiful scenery overlooking the river and across to the city of Surrey, it is the perfect spot to enjoy a nice picnic outside.

Tipperary Park

Next to the City Hall is a quiet and peaceful park called Tipperary Park. Nestled between Royal Ave and 3rd Street, this park is a 10-minute walk up the hill from Columbia Skytrain Station. It is a beautiful park to walk around and enjoy the surrounding nature as well as to sit down at one of the benches or tables to enjoy a hearty picnic. Make sure to visit Friendship Gardens beside the park to enjoy a quaint garden with ponds, small waterfalls, stepping stones, bridges, and lots of plants and trees.

Queen’s Park

Queen’s Park is a large community park perfect for outdoor lovers! Easily accessible by a 15-minute walk from Columbia Skytrain Station or a quick 10-minute bus ride, this park offers numerous amenities such as an arena, sports fields, spray parks, and more. At Queen’s Park, there are sheltered picnic tables that you can reserve for a large gathering, so come on down and reserve a table to kick-start the warm weather!

Grimston Park

Have you ever looked out the Skytrain to a sign saying “New Westminster Welcomes You” and wondered where that was? That’s Grimston Park! Only a 10-minute walk from 22nd Street Station, Grimston Park is a lovely park with a baseball field, a playground, a waterpark, and lots of picnic tables for you to enjoy a nice picnic on a sunny day. There is also an open field that overlooks the city where you can spread out a picnic cloth and sit down, enjoying the scenery while snacking on some food.

Finally, take a quick 10-minute bus ride from 22nd Street Station and we have Ryall Park, located in the Queensborough neighbourhood of New Westminster. Ryall Park also offers a sheltered picnic area that can be reserved to organize a large event or gathering.
