Hi! My name is Lucas Silva and I am very excited to be spending the summer working as Tourism Ambassador for Tourism New Westminster! I am currently studying Political Science at the University of British Columbia while also pursuing a minor in History. I’ve always enjoyed studying history, and although I’m new to learning the ins and outs of New Westminster’s past, I’m looking forward to being given the chance to discover it with you!
I have visited the city regularly and I’ve always found a distinctive charm. Just walking along Columbia Street it’s possible to take in the grandeur of massive new buildings integrated with historical landmarks. This fusion serves as a representation of New Westminster’s ability to act as a hip and current destination while still retaining an appreciation for its history. Afterall, New Westminster did serve as the original capital of western Canada.
Next time you visit New West, I would recommend that you visit some of the heritage sites around the city. Consider stopping by Irving House, a colonial era home constructed in 1865 that now serves as a museum, or perhaps wander around Fraser cemetery in the Sapperton neighbourhood and look at the tombstones of some key historical figures.
I am very excited to be able to serve as Tourism Ambassador this summer and I hope to be able to be of service to this unique and vibrant community. Feel free to come by and meet me either at the Tourism New Westminster office located in the Anvil Centre or out around the city! Whether you’re a resident of New Westminster or a visitor for the first time, I highly recommend that you take some time to discover the various corners of this distinctive city.
