“Following The Movement” ~ by Randy Oliver, at the Gallery at Queen’s Park

“I’m interested in conveying emotion in my work. I want to portray a kind of emotional excitement. In order to achieve this feeling, I incorporate movement and energy in my abstracts. The movement is often directional, meaning that it flows through the composition.

The movement in the compositions varies for each painting ,from rapid [River Reflections] to very slow and floating [Floating in the Mist]. By producing these varying types of movement I hope to elicit an emotional response that is in character with the particular movement. For example, “Floating in the Mist” is intended to give a very calm feeling; where-as

“River Reflections” is intended to give a more excited emotional response.

A quote by Emily Carr in her book “Hundreds and Thousands”, reinforces my belief that movement in a painting is so important. “Movement is the essence of being. If there is no movement in the painting, then it is dead paint.”

The painting process that I employed for these works, is an intuitive approach that has a structural component utilizing relationships between elements such as colour, space, and form.”

Randy Oliver is formally trained in fine art from the University of Alberta and The University of British Columbia. His studio is located in Vancouver. The abstractions in this exhibition deliver a feeling of movement and excitement. His work in general includes both abstract and representational paintings. He has been involved in a number of juried and group exhibitions.
