Presented by the Vancouver Chamber Music Society in
collaboration with Anvil Theatre
Experience the magical synergy of COULOIR, the extraordinary
duo featuring Ariel Barnes, 1st Solo Cellist of the Nürnberg Symphony, and
Heidi Krutzen, Principal Harp of the Philharmonia Orchestra, London. Known for
being “…deeply connected to the moment of creation both with their own
instruments and each other,” COULOIR invites you to an enchanting afternoon of
music that transcends time and space.
Program Highlights:
- Close
for Couloir, Op. 48 for harp and cello by Caroline Lizotte - Embark
on a musical journey through the landscapes of Scotland with Caroline
Lizotte’s “Close for Couloir.” This captivating suite, inspired by
historic and mythic Scottish sites, includes movements such as: - Cromlech
(Ring O’Brodgar) - Clans
(Battle O’Harlaw) - The
Sodger An’ The Queen (Edinburgh Castle) - Gargoyle
Sang (Melrose Abbey) - Man
to Man (The World O’er Shall Brithers Be For A’…)
Each movement paints a vivid sonic picture, masterfully
brought to life by the duo’s exceptional artistry.
- Dvandva
by Jeffrey Ryan - Delve
into the dualities of existence with Jeffrey Ryan’s “Dvandva.” This piece
explores contrasting yet complementary forces through movements such as: - Inspiration
and Expiration - Thought
and Desire - Gods
and Demons - Moon
and Stars - Past
and Future - Moon
and Sun - Gods
and Humans - Knowledge
and Action - Hymns
and Praises
COULOIR’s performance will illuminate the intricate balance
of these opposing elements, creating a profound and reflective musical
experience.
- Sonata
for Arpeggione in A minor, D. 821 by Franz Schubert - Conclude
the concert with Schubert’s beloved Sonata for Arpeggione, originally
composed for a now-rare instrument. In this beautiful adaptation for
cello and harp, the sonata’s lyrical melodies and rich harmonies are
given new life, showcasing the duo’s technical prowess and emotional
depth.
Join us for an unforgettable matinee with COULOIR, where the
sublime fusion of cello and harp will transport you to a world of musical
wonder. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to witness the exceptional talents
of Ariel Barnes and Heidi Krutzen.
