If you plan to arrive in New West by SkyTrain, begin your day at Braid Station and take the Central Valley Greenway cycling route up to Hume Park. Continue behind the park, exit on Garrett Street just off the Greenway and head up to New West’s trendy brunch spot, Bruncheria. We recommend finding a spot on the patio to dig into one of their famous brunch bowls before setting off on your adventure!
Connect with the Greenway at East Columbia Street and Sherbrook Street while you ride your way through the historic neighbourhood of Sapperton. The route can get confusing once you hit Debeck Street, so make sure to keep your eyes peeled for the green directory signs and bike route symbols on the road.
If your schedule allows for it, consider checking out Sapperton Landing on the other side of East Columbia Street for a rest and a peaceful ride along the Fraser River—New Westminster’s most prominent natural feature. As a friendly reminder for your safety, we recommend heading back up to the Greenway after visiting Sapperton Landing rather than continuing down Front Street.
Continuing along the Central Valley Greenway, snap a photo on the stairs of the old BC Penitentiary and share it on social media (tagging us of course!).
Cross McBride Boulevard and connect with the BC Parkway heading into Downtown New West. We suggest making a pit stop in the River Market for some tasty eats at favourites like Re-Up BBQ or Longtail Kitchen, and more. For added peace of mind, the River Market has plenty of bike racks for you to lock up your ride! After fueling up, head along the Waterfront Esplanade boardwalk and take in the scenic Fraser River.
At the end of the park, take a left onto Quayside Drive and follow the road over the overpass to Steel & Oak. Finish the day in the tasting room or basking in the sun on the roadside patio and enjoy a cold brew, radler, cider or chose from a select list of non-alcoholic beverages.
If you decide to end your journey here, head to the SkyTrain at New West Station or continue past the brewery to 22nd Street Station. When taking the latter route, cross Stewardson Way using the overpass to Grimston Park, then cross Twentieth Street to the SkyTrain. If you plan to continue your ride, follow the BC Parkway into Burnaby and Vancouver.
